DESI BOYZ : AKSHAY

With DESI BOYZ being Akshay's only release in second half of 2011 (PATIALA HOUSE and THANK YOU had arrived earlier), one would have thought that this year is comparatively relaxed year for Akshay Kumar when compared to 2010 and 2009. However the fact is that it has been busier than ever for Akshay, what with him shooting as many as three films one after another-JOKER, HOUSEFULL 2 and ROWDY RATHORE - with plans to begin ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI 2 early next year.
"Yes, but this is a well deserved seven months breather for me and my audiences between THANK YOU and DESI BOYZ," says Akshay, "You would think I was taking it easy this year but between dubbing for TRANSFORMERS, hosting FEAR FACTOR, starting and finishing JOKER and DESI BOYZ, making HOUSEFULL 2, preparing for ROWDY RATHORE and finalizing scripts for OUATIM 2 as well as planning hopefully next year's blockbusters, there is a lot happening. You can tell that I have been a bit of a busy boy but then you can also see from my face and the enthusiasm as I speak that I am very excited about all my projects."
With the kind of line up that he has ahead of him, seems like Akshay is really picking diverse genres for his forthcoming lot of films. Is that a result of a conscious call around playing the game differently?
"Every move you make when it comes to cinema, especially your own films, is always a conscious action," Akshay doesn't beat around the bush here, "If I were to make a lot of comedy films in a row, it's not because I have nothing else to do. It will be because of the way I feel the wind of cinema is blowing. Right now I feel DESI BOYZ is the perfect film for me to be releasing next. There is love, laughter, loveable lessons and not to mention me and John running around and posing again after our GARAM MASALA together. It was fun for us and it will certainly be fun for audience."

kicks off Apple's next act

The launch of Apple Inc's iPhone 4S showed just how much fans miss the showmanship of Steve Jobs. But it also gave observers a hint as to how new helmsman Tim Cook might prefer to do things.
CEO Cook ably directed the proceedings but unlike his long-time boss and master showman, quickly handed over the reins to his executive team for the actual unveiling of the new phone.
"What he did is let the team shine through," said Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett. "What we may see is a somewhat different style, and frankly a healthy style that says: Look, this is a team that works together, there's a deep bench; it's not just one person."
The event, though as usual choreographed to a tee, lacked the oomph and pizzazz of Apple events in years past and sorely missed the star power that Jobs brought to the unveilings.
And it did little to alleviate concerns about whether the company would stay a creative force to be reckoned with beyond the next year or so without its founder and visionary at the helm.
"There is every reason to be confident the company will not miss a beat operationally," said John Jackson, analyst with CCS Insight, after attending the event. "In terms of product execution and in terms of vision, it's fair to wonder out aloud if Apple is going to maintain its pace of innovation in terms of products and business model."
In the intensely competitive mobile arena, branding and marketing play critical roles. Part of Apple's mystique came from Jobs, a Silicon Valley icon who infused Apple launch events with his charisma, turning them into some of the hottest dates on the tech calendar.
The widespread disappointment with the new iPhone 4S had little to do with the device itself or the presentations but more to do with the fact that expectations had run high for a completely new phone leading up to the event, analysts said.
"Tim Cook did fine," Jackson said. "It wasn't one of these things where he set the world on fire. He held up his end of the bargain."
"What is striking about this is that this is the beginning of a new era at Apple and today's event brought that home," he added. "The bench picks up where Steve lets off."
WINNING FORMULA
Jobs has long been a larger than life figure inside and outside the company he co-founded.
Famous for his "one more thing" mantra to introduce the show-stopper, Jobs' showmanship captivated the audience. His product unveilings were watched by millions of fans and dissected by Wall Street analysts.
Expecting Cook to replicate Jobs' on-stage presence is unfair to the operations maven, perhaps even unwise, analysts said.
"I see nothing here that says the formula's not working," said Gillett. "It's certainly different characters running the game. It will be most interesting to see how it plays out in the market, when the products ship."
Instead, Apple's new product-reveal strategy appears to be to highlight the team. And few felt Apple needed to tweak its winning formula for product launches in the absence of Jobs, including conveying ahead of time what to expect at the event.
Cook, who strode onstage from the get-go, outlined a brief introduction to the company's achievements and its momentum in a conversational tone and seemed at ease.
The iPhone 4S itself was unveiled by Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller, while software head Scott Forstall and Apple veteran Eddy Cue talked about the updates to the operating system and iTunes.
The iPhone's launch took place for the first time in years at Apple central on 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino, California. This kept at bay many of the Apple faithful who typically turn up in droves and eliminated the carnival-like atmosphere that often surrounds its product introductions.
Access to the event itself was limited to the number of people they could squeeze into Apple's on-campus auditorium.
Some observers had already remarked that Apple's invitation to the event lacked the typical suspense -- the invite clearly stated "Let's talk iPhone" -- as opposed to the cryptic one-liners that had accompanied past missives.
"Steve has a charisma and a stage presence that's unmatched," said Tim Bajarin, analyst with Creative Strategies. "But having said that, in the end, even though Steve's stage presence is important, what you really care about is what he said."
"And in that context, they nailed it" on Tuesday, he added. "They communicated well not only the vision and the direction, but what they've got in the way of new products and why the consumer would want it."

potential buyers

Yahoo Inc's long-time advisers Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Allen & Co are preparing to give potential buyers financial information, in a sign the troubled Internet giant is ready to put itself on the block, sources close to the situation said.
Over the last few weeks, potential buyers including large technology and media companies, private equity and international companies have proposed many different options regarding Yahoo's various businesses, one of the sources said.
"Almost everyone on the street has some angle they are trying to play," the source said.
Jack Ma, the founder and CEO of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, told an audience at Stanford University that he would be "very interested" in buying the entire Yahoo.
The executive, who was speaking at the China 2.0 conference, said he had not visited Yahoo to discuss a deal since he arrived in the United States 15 days ago.
The struggling company is expected to take months to decide its future. Yahoo announced it had retained Allen & Co to help it conduct a long-term "strategic review."
Private equity firm Silver Lake Partners is among the parties that have been in touch with Allen & Co, according to a source familiar with the matter.
A Silver Lake spokesman declined to comment.
In a memo to employees last month, Yahoo executives said its advisers were "fielding inquiries from multiple parties that have already expressed interest in a number of potential options."
Goldman and Yahoo declined to comment. Allen & Co was not immediately available for comment.

Google, Visa team

Google Inc has enlisted Visa Inc in its effort to push mobile payments, striking an agreement to allow Visa account-holders to pay for store purchases with their smartphones.
Visa comes onboard a "Google Wallet" project already supported by Citigroup, MasterCard, Sprint Nextel Corp and First Data. In May, the group announced a trial of a system that lets shoppers store money on phones and pay at checkout.
Rival Isis, a venture between Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc and T-Mobile USA, has already signed partnerships with all the major card networks, including MasterCard and Visa.
But while Sprint announced the launch of the Google Wallet service on Monday, Isis has said its rival service will not launch until early next year.
Google's system competes with plans by other top U.S. banks and mobile phone companies and employs near-field communication (NFC) technology, used widely in Asia.
On Monday, Google and Visa said the Internet search leader had received a worldwide license to Visa's "paywave" -- similar to Mastercard's PayPass -- enabling its installation on Android smartphones. Customers link their credit or debit bank accounts to Android phones with the Google Wallet app installed.
They can then tap their phones -- which come with an NFC chip -- at specially installed terminals at checkout to effect a purchase.
"This agreement extends Google Wallet to Visa account holders worldwide," said Stephanie Tilenius, Google's vice president of Commerce and Payments.
"This is a crucial step towards realizing our shared vision for the future of mobile commerce."
For U.S. banks, mobile payments are a way to wean their customers off the use of cash and generate more revenue. Merchants pay banks a fee every time a shopper buys something with a credit or debit card and Google said it would not take a cut of those fees from the new pay-by-phone system.

Pessimism over Europe

Asian stocks floundered Tuesday as investors digested a credit downgrade slapped on Italy and awaited the outcome of a two-day Federal Reserve meeting that many hope will announce measures to boost U.S. growth.
Oil prices hovered below $86 a barrel while the dollar strengthened against the euro but slipped against the yen.
Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 1.4 percent to 8,739.74 as export shares sagged amid a persistently strong yen that weighs on company profits.
Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 1 percent to 4,042.90. Benchmarks in Taiwan, Indonesia and the Philippines also fell.
But Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.1 percent to 18,938.48 and South Korea's Kospi was 0.1 percent higher at 1,823.63. Indexes in mainland China, India, Singapore and Thailand also gained.
Investors are reluctant to engage in big moves as talks dragged on between international lending officials and Greece, which is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.
"Today you don't have the panic selling you had yesterday, but still there is no buying. So we are in for a long bear market. I don't think the market is ready to rebound yet," said Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings Ltd. in Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, Standard & Poor's downgrade of Italy's credit rating Monday added to "the pain and fear across eurozone markets," Credit Agricole CIB said in a research note. Italy's rating was cut by one notch due to weakening economic growth prospects and higher-than-expected levels of government debt, S&P said.
"Risk aversion remains highly elevated, with little prospect of a drop any time soon as Italy's downgrade adds to Europe's woes," Credit Agricole said.
In Tokyo trade, Honda Motor Corp. dropped 2.3 percent and electronics giant Sony Corp. fell 4.2 percent. Fujitsu Ltd., which provides technology services for mobile devices and servers, tumbled 4.2 percent.
Japanese Finance Minister Jun Azumi told reporters Tuesday that the recent sharp rise of the yen has slowed the pace of the country's economic recovery from the March earthquake and tsunami. Tokyo has not ruled out intervening in the currency market to stem the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar and other major currencies.
Investors are looking to the U.S. Federal Reserve in search of positive news. Many economists expect the Fed, which starts a two-day policy meeting later Tuesday, to announce something to jolt the sputtering U.S. economy.
Last month, the Fed took the step of endorsing a plan to keep short-term interest rates near zero through mid-2013.
Some economists expect the Fed to eventually try for the third time to stimulate growth through a program to buy Treasurys to lower long-term interest rates. That's a step known as "quantitative easing."
But hopes of Fed action did not mollify intensifying worries over Greece. Investors fear the nearly bankrupt country won't be able to convince lenders that it can pay its debts — and that it won't get the money it needs to avoid a default.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 0.9 percent at 11,401.01 on Monday. The drop ended five days of gains for stocks and marked the return of the back-and-forth trading that has accompanied the uncertainty about Europe's debt crisis.
The Nasdaq composite fell 0.4 percent to 2,612.83. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 1 percent to 1,204.09.
Benchmark oil for October delivery was down 3 cents at $85.67 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude dropped $2.26 to settle at $85.70 on Monday.
In London, Brent crude for November delivery was up 18 cents at $109.32 on the ICE Futures exchange.
In currencies, the dollar rose slightly to 76.53 yen from 76.50 yen in late trading Monday in New York. The euro fell to $1.3616 from $1.3671.

Computers To Pinpoint Wild

Computer simulations of the weather workings of the entire planet will be able to make forecasts to within a few kilometers accuracy, helping predict the effects of deadly weather systems.
But the world may have to wait 20 to 40 years' for such accurate information on weather events like El Nino as computer capacity grows, a senior British scientist said Thursday.
"If we step forward 20 to 40 years into the future of climate science, it is conceivable we can have climate models down to a scale of a few kilometers' resolution," Alan Thorpe, director general of the UK-based European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), told reporters.
"That would add a huge amount of information to this variability question."
A climate model is a computer-based version of the Earth's climate system, based on physics and complex equations. Such models can be used for weather forecasting, understanding the climate and projecting climate change.
A model with a very fine resolution could produce more accurate results but this depends on computer capacity.
Thorpe said some climate models are now nearing a resolution of 100 km, compared to around 300 km 10 to 15 years ago.
"We are running global weather picture models at a 16 km resolution already so we have the science and the models to reduce the problem of high resolution but we need the computer power to do it," Thorpe said.
It would cost up to 200 million pounds to buy a top-end super computer, he added, which is around 7 percent of the UK's yearly science budget of 3 billion pounds.
"The impact of climate change needs to be seen as sufficiently important to society to devote this level of resource to it," Thorpe said.
Some experts warn that some of the most devastating impacts of climate change could be felt before and during the period 2030 to 2050.
Some climate models have been criticized for not being accurate enough or not predicting extreme events far enough into the future.

Thorpe said ECMWF scientists are doing a lot of research into so-called tipping points, when there is a rapid change in the climate which is irreversible or which would take a long time to reverse.
"Inevitably, those are the aspects of the system we have to worry about most because they are not linear behavior. How many of those there are is still an open question," he added.
If we devoted the whole of the science budget to these questions we could make more rapid progress but we are doing a lot of research on these areas."
Some tipping points are seen happening in the coming decades, such as the loss of summer Arctic sea ice or the loss of the Amazon rainforest.

IPad Navigation App

TomTom will expand its offerings to include a satnav application for Apple's iPad, hoping to balance the fast shrinking of its key personal navigation device (PND) market.
TomTom's Thursday launch, at the IFA consumer electronics fair in Berlin, follows smaller rival Navigon, bought by Garmin last month, which already sells a navigation service for iPad.
The iPad, which was launched early last year, still has the tablet-computer market almost to itself. Apple has sold close to 30 million iPads, whose prices start at about $500.
TomTom has forecast that the global PND market will contract nearly 20 percent this year as economic worries hurt demand and consumers turn to free or cheap navigation on cellphones.
To offset the slump in PND sales and reduce its reliance on a single product, TomTom has increased its offerings to include an Apple iPhone app, and it is also due to launch an application for Google's Android platform.

How IT Shapes Top-Down and Bottom-Up Decision Making

What determines whether decisions happen on the bottom, middle, or top rung of the corporate ladder? New research offers a surprising conclusion: The answer often lies in the technology that a company uses.

Information-based systems, such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, will push decision-making toward the bottom of the corporate ladder. Communication systems, such as e-mail and instant messaging applications, will push the decision-making process toward the top.

And that means developing an IT strategy isn't all about deploying the best technology, says Raffaella Sadun, an assistant professor of strategy at Harvard Business School.

"If a CEO can trust his senior managers, he will be more willing to decentralize decision-making"

"The bottom line is that whoever is in charge of the acquisitions and the IT strategy, they obviously cannot just think about the technology side, they also have to think about the organizational side," she says. "Traditionally, technology is thought of as a tool that enables empowerment, but that's not always the case."

Sadun discusses the issue in "The Distinct Effects of Information Technology and Communication Technology on Firm Organization," a paper she cowrote with Nicholas Bloom of Stanford University and Luis Garicano and John Van Reenen of the Centre for Economic Performance, London School of Economics.

"Technologies that make the acquisition of information easier at the lower level of the hierarchy are associated with a decentralization of the decision-making process," Sadun says. "On the other hand, we have the communication technologies, which actually do exactly the opposite."

Facebook Top Spot In U.S. Display

Facebook's U.S. advertising revenue will total roughly $2.2 billion in 2011, displacing Yahoo Inc to collect the biggest slice of online display advertising dollars, according to a new study.
Facebook's U.S. advertising revenue will give it a 17.7 percent share of the market for graphical display ads that appear on websites, according to a report released on Monday by research firm eMarketer.
Last year Facebook had 12.2 percent share of the U.S. market.
The figures underscore the growing clout of Facebook, the world's No.1 Internet social network. It has seen its valuation soar to roughly $80 billion in recent transactions for its shares on the private markets and some investors anticipate it could have an initial public offering next year.
While Facebook has grabbed the top ranking, eMarketer analyst David Hallerman said the overall market for display ads, which include banner ads, video ads and Web page sponsorships, is growing robustly enough that it is benefiting numerous companies.
"It's not a zero sum game," said Hallerman, noting that the display advertising market is experiencing rapid growth as both big international brands and small, local businesses increasingly turn to the Web to reach consumers.
Internet companies such as Yahoo, Google Inc and Microsoft Corp are competing for those advertising budgets, while new players such as online coupon company Groupon are offering marketers alternatives to traditional online display ads.
Web portal Yahoo will grow its online display business in the U.S. by 13.6 percent this year, eMarketer said. But that will lag the overall U.S. display market's growth rate of 24.5 percent.
Google's revenue from U.S. display ads will total $1.15 billion in 2011, up 34.4 percent year-over-year.

Plane Crash In Faridabad

Mangled remains of an aircraft on streets, a damaged heavy metal fan of the engine, burning buildings, and people in panic.
This was the scene at the accident site of the chartered plane that crashed in a residential area in Faridabad last night, killing ten persons, including all seven onboard.
The aircraft lost control and nosedived crashing into the first floor of a building, killing three women residents. The building in no time turned into a ball of fire.
A battery of people surrounded the accident site, which caused difficulty in rescue operations.
"I rushed to the building, it was on fire. There were some people on the stairs who were engulfed in flames. I tried to find my way to the first floor but the flames were too strong," Omkar (30), one of the injured, said.
Three persons were injured in the mishap.
Apart from the wreckage of the ambulance aircraft, oxygen cylinders, icebox, and other medical articles were seen lying around the scene.
The whole area has been cordoned off and security personnel deployed.
The incident was a nightmare of sorts for the residents of the densely populated Parvatiya Colony as they came out of their houses after hearing the massive explosion.
"It was very scary. I heard a loud explosion and rushed outside. I saw flames all over. I immediately called my friends and nearby people to douse the fire," said Rohan, a resident of the colony.

Philippine Police

A member of the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf group wanted for kidnapping was arrested at a posh residential condominium in the Philippine capital where he worked as a security guard, police said Friday.
Arabani Jakiran was arrested amid an intensified manhunt for al-Qaida-linked militants to pre-empt any possible revenge attacks for Osama Bin Laden's killing this week in Pakistan, National Police Chief Raul Bacalzo said.
The 39-year-old native of southern Jolo island was arrested early Thursday at the Pacific Plaza Tower in metropolitan Manila's upscale Bonifacio Global City, said Chief Supt. Samuel Pagdilao Jr. of the police criminal investigation group.
Pagdilao said Jakiran has been linked to the 2001 kidnapping of 20 tourists, including three Americans, from a western Philippine resort, a siege and kidnapping at a southern hospital, and a hostage-taking in a coconut plantation.
Jakiran has a 350,000 peso ($8,160) bounty on his head and an arrest warrant for kidnapping issued by a court in southern Basilan province, he added.
The Abu Sayyaf, notorious for bombings, kidnappings for ransom and beheadings, has been blacklisted by Washington as a terrorist organization. U.S.-backed offensives have deprived it of its top leaders and hindered its ability to launch bombings and other attacks.
A government threat assessment report seen by The Associated Press in February said the 410 remaining Abu Sayyaf fighters, who remain without a central leader, are so troubled by funding problems they have kidnapped even poor victims to get ransoms.

India Biggest Threat

Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal and left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir feel that India will be the biggest threat for all teams including Pakistan in the upcoming World Cup.
"I think India, Australia and South Africa can pose a big threat as they have very strong squads for the tournament," Ajmal told Pakistan's former captain and now well-known commentator Ramiz Raja on a television show.
Ajmal said hopefully if Pakistan managed to get through to the knockout stages it would have to contend with India in the crunch stage of the event.
"Matches against India are always played with extra hype and spirit and if such a match up takes place in the World Cup at any stage it would be great for the sport," the offie stated.
He also feels that he has been in the form of his life and would make an impact in the World Cup in which the pitches are expected to assist the slow bowlers.
"I want to come out of the World Cup with appreciable performances and with people saying Saeed bowled well for the team," he said.
His teammate Tanvir said, "Both India and Sri Lanka have strong one-day combinations and both can pose a challenge to any team in the tournament and in the knockout stage," he said.
"I am confident our team can perform well in the tournament and I see India or Sri Lanka as our main threats in the latter stages of the event," Tanvir said.
The all-rounder who has made a comeback to the national team after remaining out of action for nearly a year due to a major knee operation ruled out England as a major contender for the title despite their recent success in the Ashes and after winning the T20 World Cup.
Both Tanvir and Ajmal also felt that the role of the captain and coach was crucial in getting the best performance out of their players.
"The captain and coach can do a lot to lift a player if he is going through a bad patch. A captain must back his player and tell him "I know you can deliver for me," Ajmal said.

Mubarak Fires Ministers, Vows To Stay, Appeals For Calm

Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak refused calls to step down, instead calling late Friday for his cabinet to resign amid nationwide protests.
Thousands of demonstrators, who were in the streets all day and remained past midnight in central Cairo, demanded that Mubarak step down.
'I have asked the government to resign,' Mubarak said in a televised, 11-minute speech.
A new cabinet would be named Saturday, he said.
As many as 13 protesters were killed Friday in clashes with security forces, amid a tide of anger at Mubarak, who has held power for nearly 30 years.
'Down with Mubarak,' protestors have chanted nationwide.
Friday's violence brings the death toll in this week's unrest to 27, including three officers from security forces.
The military, called out Friday to reinforce police, continued to patrol the streets with tanks and armoured vehicles as demonstrators defied the overnight curfew, ordered by Mubarak for Cairo, Suez and Alexandria but later extended nationwide.
In Cairo, protesters torched several police vehicles and stormed the foreign and information ministries. The headquarters of Mubarak's National Democratic Party party were looted and set ablaze.
In the hours following Mubarak's speech, demonstrators remained on the streets early Saturday, with a group of 20 to 30 men in one part of Cairo ransacking a neighbourhood NDP office and burning contents including plaques. Firing of tear-gas canisters could still be heard after midnight.
Mubarak said that he 'regrets innocent victims on both sides'.
He repeated promises to work toward improving Egyptians' standard of living, increase employment opportunities and improve health care.
Egyptians have been taking to the streets since Tuesday, demanding Mubarak's ouster.
Amid tear gas and armoured cars rushing through crowds to disperse protesters, a demonstrator told DPA on the street: 'All people can die, to hell with us all - only Hosny Mubarak wants to live.'
Saying he supports freedom of expression, Mubarak said that the protests had been made possible by the freedom allowed by the Egyptian government.
But the government has banned unauthorized protests and warned protesters that they would be dealt with swiftly.
More than 1,000 people have been arrested this week, with many more reportedly missing.
Citing the Health Ministry, satellite broadcaster al-Arabiya reported that more than 1,000 people had been injured in Friday's clashes.
Internet and mobile communications were cut Friday across Egypt, after social-networking websites used to organize protests were blocked earlier in the week.
One focus of the demonstrations has been corruption, which Mubarak vowed to curb in his Friday night speech.
'What happened during this protest supersedes chaos and puts into motion a plan to shake stability,' he said.
Mubarak warned that other protests around the world have resulted in less stability. The government has long used stability as a rallying cry against calls for reform or change.
'I stand by the protection of Egypt's safety and stability,' Mubarak said.
Friday's demonstrations had been planned to start after weekly prayers at mosques across the country. Security forces had tried to no avail to prevent rallies by blocking access to many mosques and potential demonstration sites.
Sajjid al-Badawi, head of the liberal Wafd opposition party, gave a press conference Friday night demanding a transitional government and changes to the Egyptian constitution.
World governments have weighed in heavily on the ongoing violence, urging peace and calm and calling on the Egyptian government to respect protesters' freedoms of speech and assembly.
The US threatened Friday to withhold aid to Egypt if President Hosny Mubarak's regime does not immediately halt violence against protesters and move toward introducing reforms.
This week's protests are the biggest in Egypt since bread riots in the 1970s.
